the cia director. he's got to probably replace hillary clinton at state. leon panetta at defense. as he starts to move pieces around, maybe as attorney general, the president demands two things when you think about these big appointments. diversity and excellence. and now, replacing his cia director is going to have to be part of that mix, to get a national security seem that can work really well together, general petraeus had a mixed reputation on that score. some people in the pentagon, in the intelligence community, resented him a little bit. he's a superstar. and superstars in any high pressure field are going to have some people questioning are they team players? there was some of that. but he did perform at a very high level. one of the most excellent people in his profession in the last 100 years. they need to find somebody to replace him. >> is there a political fallout from this? whether it's for the president, or for any others in washington? >> i think the most likely political fallout could relate to benghazi. there's still this question, one of the things that goes on in

scandal that brought down cia director david petraeus. this morning defense secretary leon panetta announced the man who succeeded david petraeus is under investigation himself. general john allen, the top u.s. and nato commander in afghan stand is accused of, quote, inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she started the investigation. a senior official traveling with allen says his communications with kelly are under review. the official says general allen disputes engaging in any wrongdoing in the matter. the fbi referred the matter to the department of defense for investigation on sunday. early this morning secretary panetta directed that the defense department inspector general investigate. meanwhile, last night fbi agents went to the home of biographer paula broadwell, the woman government officials say petraeus acknowledged having an affair with. a senior law enforcement official says the search was consensual, not a raid. meanwhile, they said petraeus had hoped to survive the scandal but he was told to resign by james clapper. andrea mitchell broke the petraeus story.

traveling, the defense secretary leon panetta announced the military is now investigating allen as well, and senior military officials tell us it's because over a two-year period there were thousands, 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails between allen and jill kelley. k keep in mind jill kelley is the woman that touched off the fbi investigation that led to the resignation of petraeus. she's the one that claimed she was getting harassing e-mails, and when the fbi looked into that, they traced those e-mails back to paula broadwell. as they were looking at her e-mails, they realized she was having an affair with general petraeus, and both of them in interviews with the fbi have admitted that. so back to allen. allen now under investigation for the e-mails that the pentagon says are potentially inappropriate. he denies any sort of inappropriate contact or e-mailing or relationship with jill kelley, but now his own senate confirmation is on hold. ironically, before all this happened, he was already here in washington for senate confirmation on thursday. he was being moved up to oversee troops

than the five months under secretary penev. there have been -- secretary panetta. they have been more effective. some of the strikes have gone down lately. i do n know how to read into that. does that necessarily mean we're increasing that pair militarization -- paramilirization of the agency? petraeus suggested this ca position and gates embraced it in november and december and did not ta to obama about it until january. the first time they talk about the position was in march. the president had been mulling it over. i never got the sense from him, from the president, from petrae or anyone on the national securit council that he would be put there to militarize the agency. petraeus is thinking how the defense department is shying away from this large scale boots on the ground operation and gates said the next leader who decides to commit to one of these operations should have their friend -- heads examined. petraeus is thinking even if -- as he goes to the agency, that is the future of warfare. i would be speculating if i guess the president had an intention of turning the agency int
